Cactus? What cactus?

Last week Blake's class went on a field trip to learn about the desert. I went along and chaperoned. Now, I know you all say it doesn't get cold in Arizona but it was cold. Yes, we even have mountains and ski slopes. Well, it was cold and overcast. Here we are inside watching a video. See the kids in warm coats. Blake was watching closely.
See how cold we all look. The kids learned about wildlife in the desert. Yes, the lady is holding a live snake. Not my fav part but the kids loved it. The look on her face is great. She told the kids that a lot of animals live in holes in the desert so not to poke sticks into the holes. How would you like it if you were chatting with the little ones about school and some one puts a big stick in your living room. They said that something like 80% of the people injured from animals in the desert are boys. Go figure.
See how cold he looks. You just gotta love those gorgeous blue eyes.
See how cold we look. I just had to post this pic so you can see how grey the sky was. We were learning about the different cactus. To me a cactus is a cactus but we did learn that you can drink the juice from the agave cactus. If you can get past the smell its not to bad.

Scouts!!!

I know it has been a while since my last post. I didn't have the software loaded to edit my pics but now I do. So, here we go...

Anyone that knows our family knows that we are big into scouts. We have a boy scout, cub scout and a girl scout (of course). It pretty much consumes any free time we ever thought of having. LOL They say its just an hour a week but what they don't tell you is its actually only an hour you have left. Jeff was Kirk's leader when he was a cub scout and is now a boy scout leader. I was Blake's den assistant den leader but now I am the pack committee chair. I am also Desirae's troop leader. It keeps us very busy but we have fun and it gives the kids good values and direction. Plus we love to camp.

This is our lovely girl scout. She is a Daisy. Desirae has just earned all her petals. It was just natural that she go into scouts because she has been around scouting since she was little. This is her first year selling cookies! Woohoo! And we are still selling if anyone wants to buy. You know you do!
Blake started at the beginning which is a Tiger. His best friend, Travis, got him interested in scouting. My good friend, Sandy, Travis' mom, got me into scouting. When the boys were in Kindergarten (they can start scouts after Kindergarten) she asked me if I wanted to be her assistant den leader. I said no and then felt bad and changed my mind. We have had a fabulous time together so it worked out great. She is getting ready to start all over at Tigers with her younger son.
Kirk is a boy scout. He started as a Bear (the 3rd cub scout rank) by joining a classmates den. Then the leader moved and that is when Jeff took over. He has said that he would like to become a K9 police officer when he gets older. Me being the Army brat that I am suggested that he go into the military and get paid to train first. He then learned that if he gets his eagle rank it means he goes into the military with one rank already. He liked that idea. I think he will get his eagle even if he decides on another career.

At the end of Kirk's first year his leader moved away. I suggested to Jeff that he take over. In the beginning he didn't want to but he did it so the boys would still have a den. Since then he has been a leader to 2 other dens that didn't have leaders and usually had 2 dens at the same time. He has led 3 dens to crossover (into boy scouts) which included Kirk's den. He has taken over Blake's den now that they are Webelos (WE BE LOyal Scouts, I know I was confused at first also) and they will crossover next year. Then Jeff will just be with the troop. He has been named District Den Leader of the year 2 years in a row. He tries to say he doesn't enjoy it but he can't fool us.

So, here I am. Talking. I am the committee chair. I help keep all the leaders and different committees going in a forward direction. I try to keep it all positive and have a good time. Next year when Blake crosses over into boy scouts I will be done with cub scouts. It will be strange since it has been a part of my life for the last 4 years. But, I will still have my wonderful girl scouts but thats for another post. LOL

Here we are the Holding scouts.
